Lesson 23 – Handgun Types and Calibers
Permit to Carry students are expected to understand the basic types of handguns and common calibers used for personal protection. While no specific caliber is required by law, choosing a suitable defensive firearm is an important decision.
🔫 Common Handgun Types:
- Semi-Automatic Pistols: Most popular carry choice; use magazines and fire one round per trigger pull
- Revolvers: Reliable and simple; usually 5–6 round capacity
📏 Common Calibers for Defensive Carry:
- 9mm: Most widely used; manageable recoil and good stopping power
- .380 ACP: Lower recoil, often used in compact carry guns
- .40 S&W / .45 ACP: Higher recoil; used by some law enforcement and experienced shooters
- .22 LR: Not generally recommended for self-defense due to limited stopping power
✅ Choosing a Defensive Handgun:
- Ensure you can safely operate, load, and clear the firearm
- Practice regularly with your chosen caliber and platform
- Test various sizes to find what fits your hand and carry method
There is no perfect handgun for everyone. The best defensive firearm is the one you are trained to use safely, confidently, and consistently.
