Lesson 31 – Responding to a Firearm Incident in Public
If you witness a shooting or other firearm-related incident in public, your actions can impact your safety and your legal standing. As a permit holder, you must think clearly and act responsibly.
🚨 If You’re Not Involved:
- Do not draw your firearm unless there is a direct threat to you or others
- Seek cover and call 911
- Be a good witness — observe details, not emotions
🧍 If You’re Armed:
- Only intervene if deadly force is justified under Minnesota law (immediate threat to life)
- If you do draw your firearm, be prepared for confusion by responding officers and witnesses
- Holster and identify yourself immediately when law enforcement arrives
📞 Talking to Police:
- Follow all commands without argument
- Clearly state: “I have a permit to carry. My firearm is holstered.”
- Answer basic questions but wait for legal counsel before providing detailed statements
Jumping into a situation without full knowledge can turn you from witness to suspect. Protect yourself and others by staying calm, thinking critically, and knowing the law.
