Lesson 36 – Carry Restrictions: Federal and State Buildings, Schools, and Signs
Even with a valid Minnesota Permit to Carry, there are locations where you may not lawfully carry a firearm. Violating these restrictions can lead to criminal charges or revocation of your permit.
🏛️ Federal Buildings (Firearms Prohibited):
- Post offices
- Federal courthouses
- Social Security offices
- Any building owned or leased by the federal government
🏫 Schools and School Property:
- Firearms are prohibited on K–12 school grounds, buildings, and school buses
- Exception: carry is allowed while in a vehicle if the firearm is unloaded and secured
- Colleges and universities may set their own policies — follow signage and rules
🏢 State Buildings and Courthouses:
- You may carry in the State Capitol and many state buildings with prior notice to the Commissioner of Public Safety
- Courthouses require written permission from the sheriff
- County and city buildings may also restrict carry — always check local rules
🚫 “No Gun” Signs:
- Private property owners may prohibit firearms on their premises
- In Minnesota, signs carry the weight of law — if asked to leave, you must comply immediately
- Refusing to leave can result in a trespassing charge
Stay up to date on restricted locations and always err on the side of caution. When in doubt, secure your firearm and seek clarification.
