Permit Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for a Minnesota Permit to Carry under MN Statute 624.714, you must meet the following requirements:

✅ Basic Eligibility:

  • At least 21 years old
  • A citizen or permanent resident of the United States
  • Not prohibited from possessing firearms under state or federal law
  • No felony convictions or violent crime convictions
  • Must complete authorized firearms training within one year of applying

🚫 Disqualifiers Include:

  • Felony convictions (state or federal)
  • Domestic abuse or assault convictions
  • Pending criminal charges that would prohibit firearm possession
  • Involuntary commitment for mental health or chemical dependency
  • Dishonorable discharge from the U.S. Armed Forces

The issuing sheriff’s office will run a full criminal background check, including mental health and domestic violence records, as required by law.

If you’re unsure about your eligibility, you can request a permit and the sheriff will determine your status during review. It’s not your responsibility to “pre-disqualify” yourself — let the system work as intended.
