Prohibited Locations for Carrying Firearms

Even with a valid Minnesota Permit to Carry, there are specific places where carrying a firearm is prohibited by law or policy.

🚫 Statutorily Prohibited Locations (MN Statute 624.714 Subd. 16):

  • Public or private elementary, middle, and high schools
  • Childcare centers while children are present
  • Federal buildings and courthouses
  • State correctional facilities or jails
  • Courthouse complexes (unless you’ve notified the sheriff as required by law)

🏢 Private Property with Posted Notices:

  • Property owners may prohibit firearms on their premises
  • Signs must be clearly posted, or you must be verbally notified
  • Violation may result in removal or a trespass citation — not a gun charge

🚔 Law Enforcement Contact:

  • You are not required to voluntarily notify officers you are carrying unless asked
  • If asked, you must provide your permit and valid photo ID

Always be aware of your surroundings and respect posted signage. The responsibility to carry lawfully falls on you as the permit holder.
