Carrying at Work and Employer Policies

Minnesota law does not prohibit you from carrying at your place of employment if you have a valid permit — but your employer may.

🏢 What the Law Allows:

  • With a valid Minnesota Permit to Carry, you may legally carry at work unless it’s otherwise prohibited by law (e.g., courthouses, schools, etc.)
  • State law does not restrict carrying in private businesses — but employers have the right to set policies

📋 Employer Policies Matter:

  • Your employer can prohibit employees from carrying while on duty or on company property
  • Violating a company’s no-carry policy is not a crime — but it can result in disciplinary action or termination
  • If you are unsure of your workplace policy, ask or check your employee handbook

🚫 Special Cases:

  • Federal workplaces, schools, and government buildings follow separate rules and often ban firearms completely
  • Private contractors working in prohibited zones must follow location-specific restrictions

Always check and respect your employer’s policies. While you may have the legal right to carry, that doesn’t override workplace rules.
