Carrying Firearms in Vehicles

Minnesota law allows permit holders to carry firearms in vehicles, both loaded and on their person, as long as they remain in compliance with their permit.

🚗 Rules for Permit Holders:

  • You may carry your firearm loaded and on your person while driving
  • The firearm may also be stored in a closed compartment (e.g., glove box or center console)
  • It may be holstered, concealed, or openly visible within the vehicle

🛻 Transporting Without a Permit:

  • If you do not have a permit, the firearm must be:
    • Unloaded
    • In a locked case or trunk
    • Out of reach of vehicle occupants

🚨 Traffic Stops and Law Enforcement:

  • You are not required to disclose that you’re carrying unless directly asked
  • If asked, provide both your permit and government-issued photo ID
  • Remain calm and follow all officer instructions

Carrying in vehicles is a major part of daily life for many permit holders — know the rules, follow them, and stay safe.
