Carrying While Hunting or in the Field

Many permit holders carry while engaging in outdoor activities such as hunting, hiking, or fishing. While legal, there are specific rules and licensing requirements to be aware of.

🏕️ Carrying While Hunting:

  • You may carry a pistol while hunting if you have a valid Permit to Carry
  • You must follow all hunting regulations — including caliber restrictions for game animals
  • You may not use your carry pistol to take game outside of legal seasons or without proper tags

⚖️ Carry vs. Possession:

  • If you are hunting and carrying a pistol for personal protection, it must be separate from your hunting firearm unless legal for the species
  • Carrying for defense in the woods does not excuse violations of DNR hunting regulations

🚫 Prohibited Areas:

  • Some federal and state lands may have restrictions
  • Always check posted rules for wildlife management areas (WMAs) and state parks

Your permit does not override hunting laws. Know the rules before you carry in the field to avoid accidental violations.
