Lesson 11 – Permit Validity, Expiration, and Renewal

Your Minnesota Permit to Carry is valid for five years from the date it is issued, unless it is revoked or suspended.

⏳ Permit Expiration:

  • Expiration date is printed on the front of your permit card
  • It is your responsibility to track and renew your permit before it expires
  • You may not carry a firearm once your permit has expired

🔄 Renewal Process:

  • You may renew within 90 days prior to expiration
  • There is a 30-day grace period after expiration (you may not carry during this time)
  • After 30 days, your renewal becomes a new application
  • Must complete a new training course within one year of submitting your renewal

💡 Tip:

Many instructors and county sheriffs recommend renewing your permit at least 30–60 days before it expires to avoid gaps in coverage.

Your instructor will provide guidance and documentation for renewal training when needed.
