Lesson 18 – Firearm Storage and Access at Home
Safe and responsible firearm storage is a critical part of being a permit holder. Minnesota law addresses access to firearms by unauthorized persons, especially minors.
🔐 Key Concepts:
- Store firearms in a manner that prevents unauthorized access — especially by children
- Use gun safes, lockboxes, or cable locks when firearms are not under your direct control
- Ammunition should be stored separately from firearms whenever possible
📜 MN Statute 609.666 – Negligent Storage of Firearms:
A person is guilty of a gross misdemeanor if they negligently store or leave a loaded firearm in a location where the person knows, or reasonably should know, that a child is likely to gain access to the firearm without the parent or guardian’s permission…
🏠 Responsible Storage Tips:
- Use quick-access safes near the bed for defensive firearms
- Educate household members on firearm safety and expectations
- Secure firearms even if you live alone — theft is a real risk
As a permit holder, you are responsible for ensuring your firearms do not fall into the wrong hands. Safe storage is both a legal and moral responsibility.
