Lesson 27 – Carrying with a Round Chambered
A common question among new permit holders is whether to carry with a round in the chamber. While personal comfort varies, carrying with an empty chamber can delay your response in a critical moment.
🔫 Chambered vs. Unchambered:
- Chambered: A round is ready to fire immediately when the trigger is pulled
- Unchambered: You must rack the slide to chamber a round before firing
⏱️ Reaction Time Matters:
- Defensive encounters are typically fast, chaotic, and up close
- There may not be time or space to rack the slide safely
- Delays can cost lives — milliseconds matter
🛡️ Safety Depends on Training:
- Carrying chambered is safe if your holster fully protects the trigger and you follow the rules of firearm safety
- Use a holster that prevents accidental discharge
- Never touch the trigger until on target and ready to fire
Professionals and experienced permit holders overwhelmingly carry with a round in the chamber. With proper training, it is the safest and most effective way to be prepared to defend yourself.
