Lesson 37 – Carrying in Other States and Reciprocity

Your Minnesota Permit to Carry is recognized in many other states — but not all. This concept is known as reciprocity. Before traveling with a firearm, you must verify each state’s specific laws.

🌎 Reciprocity Basics:

  • Reciprocity means one state recognizes the permit issued by another
  • Each state sets its own rules for where and how you may carry
  • Recognition is based on agreements between states and may change without notice

🗺️ States That Commonly Recognize Minnesota’s Permit:

  • Examples include: North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Arizona, Texas, and more
  • Some states, like Wisconsin, only recognize Minnesota’s permit if the holder is 21+ — note that MN now issues at 18

⚠️ Critical Reminders:

  • You must follow the laws of the state you are in, not Minnesota law
  • “Duty to inform,” prohibited places, and vehicle carry laws vary widely
  • Check official state websites or trusted reciprocity tools before each trip

Carrying across state lines requires extra diligence. The same actions that are lawful in Minnesota may be criminal elsewhere. Know before you go — and travel responsibly.
