Lesson 38 – Interacting with Law Enforcement in Other States

When carrying a firearm while traveling, it’s critical to understand that each state may have different rules for traffic stops, carry notification, and law enforcement interaction. Respecting these differences is part of responsible armed citizenship.

🗣️ Disclosure Requirements Vary:

  • Some states require you to notify law enforcement that you are armed — failure to do so may be a crime
  • Other states leave it up to the officer to ask
  • When in doubt, disclose your status clearly and calmly

🧾 What to Say:

  • Example: “Officer, I have a valid permit to carry. I am armed. How would you like me to proceed?”
  • Keep your hands visible and movements slow

📜 Documentation to Carry:

  • Always carry your Minnesota Permit to Carry
  • Keep government-issued photo ID ready
  • Consider carrying printed reciprocity maps or proof of recognition (some states appreciate it)

🚫 Avoid Risky Behavior:

  • Never reach toward your firearm during a stop
  • Don’t debate the law on the roadside — save it for court if needed
  • Be respectful and professional regardless of the officer’s attitude

How you handle a stop reflects on you as a permit holder and can impact how officers treat others in the future. Be calm, respectful, and always put safety first.
