Range Preparation & Safety

Show up prepared, stay safe, and get quality reps. Use this checklist to set yourself up for a smooth, productive
live-fire session.

① What to Bring

  • Eye & ear protection (required).
  • Pistol & holster (rigid, covers trigger; full firing grip on draw). If you don’t own a pistol, notify instructor for loaner/range rules.
  • Magazines: 2–3 minimum; Ammo: 100–150 rounds for this session.
  • Clothing: closed-toe shoes, high collar/hat (deflect hot brass), weather-appropriate layers.
  • Other: water, small towel, notebook/pen, medical kit if you have one.

② Pre-Range Prep (at home)

  • Unload & clear before handling or case work at home; verify chamber/magwell visually & physically.
  • Stage gear the night before: pistol cased, mags loaded, ammo boxed, PPE in the bag.
  • If using a new holster or sights: dry practice safe draw-to-sight picture (no ammo present) to smooth first reps.

③ On Arrival

  • Arrive 10–15 minutes early. Keep guns cased and unhandled until instructed.
  • When called to the line, face downrange; listen to the safety brief.
  • Confirm your medical plan: location of IFAK/trauma kit, who calls 911, range address.

④ Range Commands (you’ll hear these)

  • “Cold Range” — No handling firearms without direction.
  • “Load and Make Ready” — Load under control; finger straight; muzzle safe.
  • “Finger / Muzzle!” — Immediate correction; acknowledge and fix.
  • “Cease Fire” — Stop now; finger straight; muzzle safe; await instructions.

⑤ Line Etiquette & Safety

  • Muzzle discipline and trigger finger straight unless firing.
  • Reholster slowly, look the gun into the holster; clear garments first.
  • Step off the line to fix gear; keep gun oriented safely or holstered.
  • Ask questions anytime — safety beats speed.

⑥ Today’s Focus & Standards

  • Intro shooters: Safe draws from low-ready, 1-shot accuracy, cadence built on sight picture, then controlled pairs.
  • Refresher shooters: Reconfirm fundamentals, 1-R-1 reload reps, malfunction clears under supervision, accuracy at 3–10 yds.
  • Quality over speed. We’ll add pace only when hits are honest.

⑦ Weather & Range Policies

  • Dress for conditions; bring water in heat and gloves/hand-warmers in cold.
  • Brass: follow posted policy. Police your lane when told; watch footing.
  • No drugs/alcohol; certain prescriptions may preclude training—ask if unsure.

⑧ After Your Session

  • Log any equipment issues to address before next class.
  • Wipe down, lube if needed, and safe storage when you get home.
  • Book your next session or a skills block while it’s fresh.
