Why I Use Steel Targets
Steel targets are one of the most useful training tools you can own. Immediate feedback matters. When a student hears the ring of steel, they instantly know the shot was good.
That matters on a training range because it gives the shooter feedback without walking downrange after every few shots. It keeps the lesson moving and helps students connect what they saw, what they felt, and where the round went.
What This Target Has Been Through
The silhouette pictured above has lived on my range for about five years and has taken roughly ten thousand pistol hits. It finally started looking a little rough, so it recently got a quick pass with an angle grinder and flap disk to clean off the old paint and bullet smear.
Fresh paint, and it is ready for another season.
That is the advantage of quality steel.
Buy once, cry once.
Why X-Steel Targets Belongs Here
I use steel targets from a Minnesota company called X-Steel Targets. Their AR500 and AR550 plates have held up extremely well on my range, even with heavy use.
This is not gear I am guessing about. These targets have been shot, repainted, cleaned up, and put back to work. That is what I want from range equipment.
My range standard: I want targets that are safe when used correctly, durable enough for real training use, and simple enough to keep working season after season. X-Steel has earned that spot on my range.

Safety note: Steel targets must be used correctly. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for target distance, ammunition type, target angle, target condition, and eye protection. Damaged steel, improper distance, or the wrong ammunition can create unnecessary risk.
If you train with me at Davey Defense, chances are you will hear these targets ringing on the range.
