Permit to Carry Renewal Process
In Minnesota, there is no difference between a new Permit to Carry and a renewal. The legal process is identical.
Minnesota law does not provide a shortcut, exemption, or reduced requirement just because you have held a permit before. If your permit is expired, or nearing expiration, you must complete the same training and live fire requirements as a first time applicant.
Whether this is your first permit or a renewal, the steps are the same every time.
- Take a certified Permit to Carry class in person or online if available.
- Schedule a date and time for the live fire range session with the instructor.
- Receive your certificate of training course completion.
- Fill out the Permit to Carry application.
- Take both documents, the application fee, and your state issued ID to your county sheriff’s office in person for submission. Some offices require an appointment, so check ahead.
- Go home and wait by the mailbox.
