Davey Defense – Minnesota Permit to Carry

Lesson 10.3: Law Enforcement Encounters Outside Minnesota

When carrying outside Minnesota, you must follow the law of the state you are in.

Your Minnesota Permit to Carry does not bring Minnesota disclosure rules or stop procedures with it.

Minnesota Is Not the Rule Everywhere

In Minnesota, a permit holder carrying a pistol must have the permit card and government-issued photo identification in immediate possession.

The permit holder must display both upon lawful demand by a peace officer and must truthfully disclose whether they are carrying if asked.

Other states may require something different.

During a Stop

Keep your hands visible.

Do not reach for the firearm or near the firearm.

If your documents are near the firearm, say so before reaching.

Follow lawful instructions. Speak clearly. Tell the truth.

Do Not Handle the Firearm

Do not touch, move, unload, remove, or display the firearm unless lawfully directed or immediate safety requires it.

If you do not understand an instruction, ask before moving.

Davey Defense Standard

Know the disclosure rule before carrying in another state.

Keep your hands visible, your words clear, and your firearm secured unless lawfully directed otherwise.
