Lesson 5.5: Permit Holder Responsibilities and Documentation
Permit and Identification
A permit holder is responsible for more than carrying the permit card.
Under Minnesota Statute 624.714, subdivision 1b, a permit holder must have the permit card and government issued photo identification in immediate possession when carrying a pistol.
Do not leave them behind.
Changes, Lost Cards, and Replacement Cards
Under Minnesota Statute 624.714, subdivision 7a, a permit holder must notify the issuing sheriff within 30 days after changing legal name or permanent address.
The permit holder must also notify the sheriff within 30 days if the permit card is lost or destroyed.
Failure to provide required notice is a petty misdemeanor. The fine for a first offense must not exceed $25.
A replacement permit card may be obtained through the sheriff after the required notice, fee, and notarized statement when required.
If You Become Prohibited
Under Minnesota Statute 624.714, subdivision 8, a permit to carry is void when the holder becomes prohibited by law from possessing a firearm.
If that happens, the permit holder must return the permit card to the issuing sheriff within five business days after the holder knows or should know that the holder is prohibited.
Permit Status Matters
A permit holder is responsible for knowing whether the permit is current, expired, suspended, revoked, or void.
A permit card is not enough if the permit is no longer valid.
Davey Defense Standard
Keep your permit and identification with you. Track your expiration date. Report required changes. Replace a lost or destroyed permit. Know your legal status before you carry.
