Davey Defense – Minnesota Permit to Carry

Lesson 7.5: Employers, Vehicles, and Parking Lot Considerations

Purpose of This Lesson

Workplaces and vehicles create practical carry issues.

This lesson explains employer policies, parking areas, and vehicle storage.

Employer Policies

Under Minnesota Statute 624.714, subdivision 18, an employer may establish policies that restrict the carry or possession of firearms by employees while acting in the course and scope of employment.

Employment consequences may apply for violating those policies.

That means something may be allowed under permit law and still create workplace problems.

Parking Facilities and Parking Areas

Minnesota Statute 624.714, subdivision 18, states that an employer may not prohibit lawful carry or possession of firearms in a parking facility or parking area.

An employer may restrict employee carry while working, but Minnesota law protects lawful carry or possession in parking facilities and parking areas.

Vehicles Are Not Safes

A vehicle may be part of a carry plan, but a vehicle is not a safe.

If a firearm must be left in a vehicle, secure it out of sight and in a locked container when possible.

Do not leave a firearm loose in a vehicle.

Davey Defense Standard

At Davey Defense, students are taught to plan before work, errands, appointments, and travel.

Know the policy. Know the location. Know whether the firearm stays on you, stays secured in the vehicle, or stays home.

Do not improvise firearm storage in a parking lot because you failed to plan.
